Health Insurance FAQs

What is supplemental health insurance?
Supplemental insurance benefits, like cancer insurance, heart/stroke insurance and accidental injury insurance, are paid directly to you, unless otherwise required. In contrast, hospital and major medical insurance benefits are typically paid directly to the provider. As a policyholder, you can use those benefits to help with your out-of-pocket expenses or loss of income.

If I purchase a supplemental health insurance policy, do I still need major medical insurance?
Yes. Supplemental insurance products such as cancer, heart/stroke and accidental injury insurance aren't a replacement for major medical insurance. Instead, these policies help to cover expenses that are not covered by major medical insurance.

How else can I pay for out-of-pocket expenses?
In addition to supplemental health insurance, other options you may need to consider include drawing on life savings or selling personal assets to help pay for out-of-pocket expenses.

What physicians may I use with my supplemental health insurance policies?
You may continue to use your current physicians. In the case of Medicare supplement insurance, benefits are paid directly to your provider. For cancer insurance, heart/stroke insurance and accidental injury insurance, benefits are paid directly to you.
